Geophysics is the science which deals with investigating the Earth's internal structure dynamics, using the methods and techniques of Physics and Mathematics. About 50,000 years ago, an asteroid collided with the Earth, leaving a mile-across impact crater in what is now northern Arizona. This session will highlight and explore fundamental, challenging questions of our planet and how to better develop synergies between mathematics and geophysics. Earth Scientists focus on today’s pressing challenges to society: earthquake risk, water resource availability, natural resources and sustainability, and societal impact of changing climate.

What prompted the revival of continental drift? In large part it was increased exploration of the Earth's crust, notably the ocean floor, beginning in the 1950s and continuing on to the present day. By the late 1960s, plate tectonics was well supported and accepted by almost all geologists. We now know that Wegener's theory was wrong in one major point: continents do not plow through the ocean floor , cited: The Future of Marine Geology and Geophysics: Report of a Workshop, Ashland Hills, Oregon, December 5-7, 1996 www.patricioginelsa.com. The majority of our students expect to make their careers in the earth or space sciences; however, some are considering careers in business, law, teaching or the health sciences. Medical and dental schools do accept applicants with degrees in the earth sciences, and some schools favor those applicants with a broad background in the physical sciences. If you are interested in pursuing one of these challenging goals, a major in Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences is an interesting alternative to the more conventional majors for pre-professional students Quaternary Glaciations - Extent and Chronology, Volume 2: Part II: North America (Developments in Quaternary Science) (Pt.
