Self-reflective and critical analyses of social, cultural, historical and political contexts are central to work in Comparative Studies. At the core of our inquiry is how religion is invoked in political contexts (and vice-versa), public displays of religiosity, and the complex dynamics of religion and the state. Bibliography is determined through consultation between the student and the primary faculty advisor. This module will examine various aspects of the British army’s imperial experience between 1750 and 1920 (although the focus will fall, for the most part on the small wars of the Victorian period).
