The Symphonie (1928) is cast for nine solo instruments in two movements: a sonata form followed by a theme and seven variations. They can consist of one to five acts subdivided into scenes. The singing mainly follows two sets of tunes, called xipi, used to express an excited mood such as happiness, anger or agitation, and erhuang, used to express a subdued mood such as loss in deep thought, sorrow and melancholy. In the early monodic literature, three methods of achieving musical coherence can be found: repetitions and imitations between bass and melody, and the most characteristic one strophic variation (strophic bass).

Some stages were limited to either white or Black performers, in some venues the stage was not segregated but the audience was, and many venues were entirely for Blacks or whites only. Sheet music publishers and recording companies also designed their products for Black or white audiences, however, music and songs are difficult to segregate. While composers writing songs for the minstrel stage before the turn of the twentieth century usually had no choice but to identify themselves as African Americans, composers producing popular songs in the 1920s could sometimes choose whether to identify themselves as African American composers, or to allow their sheet music or sound recordings to stand on their own, and perhaps gain wider circulation by not advertising the issue of the composer's origins , cited: Bring it on download pdf.

Folk rhythms are generally not complicated, Bartok excepted. While some writers hold that Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi- d'un faune and Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht are dramatic departures from Romanticism and have strong modernist traits (Ibid.), others hold that the Schoenberg work is squarely within the late-Romantic tradition of Wagner and Brahms (Neighbour 2001, 582) and, more generally, that "the composer who most directly and completely connects late Wagner and the twentieth century is Arnold Schoenberg" (Salzman 1988, 10) epub.
