At NUI Galway we offer an approach to Earth and Ocean Sciences that is unique in Ireland. Earthquakes are by far most common along plate boundaries and rift zones: plotting the location of earthquakes allows seismologists to map plate boundaries and depths (click on the picture at the right to view a map of quake epicenters). It is primarily used to identify, map or predict the presence and potential movement of surface water and groundwater and to identify contaminants in the soil moisture within the upper 10 to 50 m of the Earth's surface.

By the end of the first year, students usually select a particular area of focus and choose an adviser.
