However, as a graduate of West Point and as a hero of the Mexican War, he felt a deeper commitment to the union than did some of his fellow states’ rightists. His reputation as a figure of both national and sectional prominence increased during his service as secretary of war from 1853 to 1857. When President Pierce’s term of office expired, the Mississippi legislature elected Davis to the United States Senate. During his last Senate term, he strongly defended slavery and its expansion. However, Davis’s sincere support of both nationalism and sectionalism kept him free from the bitterest battles in Congress.
