When I began seeing him at the age of 7, following upon the departure of his previous therapist, I found him exceptionally difficult to reach, partly because of what were to be for many years inadequate treatment conditions, but also because his withdrawal was so deep and chronic. The diagnosis has been confirmed on several occasions by professionals of differing schools of thought, but I should say that he was very different from and, in a way, much iller than the type of autistic child who presents as more actively withdrawn, and who has some structure in his personality.

These long lists, unlike the long stocking, were his creation. The games represented, I think, a considerable development in the direction of Robbie's relinquishing external, sticking techniques in favour of imaginative reconstruction; or rather, they began this way. Each game began with some meaning and function; it usually dealt with some anxiety past or current. After several days of repetition, he looked much less worried as we played the game, and could even sometimes smile at the him who had been afraid a short while ago.
