Both wearing Turkic style armour and eastern influenced weapons . including a composite bow and scimitar. n the power vacuum left by the death of Attila and the warfare between his successors, rode a new confederation of steppe warriors-the Avars. Like the Huns. they were of Turkic origin, and included many of the descendants of the warriors that rode with Attila. Indeed, so closely were they associated with the Huns that this is the name by which they were called by many western European chroniclers.

The name by which they live, however, is spoken in a language alien to the Turkic tongue of the Huns. It is Finno-Ugric and it is the language of the last great steppe warriors to settle In central Europe-the Magyars. So successful was this invasion of horse-borne warriors that today, a thousand years later, over 90 per cent of Hungarians still call themselves Magyars. What is also most remarkable about the Magyars is that these tribesmen broke the thousand year c ultural shift of Turkic and Germanic barbarians into Hungary and replaced it with a culture coming from the north , from the land east of the Baltic Sea, bringing them closer in cultural style to the Finns as well as the Lithuanians, Latvians, and Slavs.

The main combat revolved around o siege of Pavia in which the Lombords were forced to admit Charlemagne's supremacy. The painting depicts o scene during Charlemagne's campaign in which Lombords hove dispatched one of the ironclad Frankish invaders. The main Lombard warrior wears o sponqenhelm with body armour mode of lamella. a kind of scale armour adopted by the Romans from the Middle East. Lamella consisted of long narrow iron scales laced both horizontally and vertically and because of this lacing needed no leather backing , unlike the more traditional scale armour worn by the dead Fronk which was attached to fabric or leather and so was less flexible and vulnerable to upward thrusts.
