Our formulation of a theoretical problem depends on the language, however primitive or rudimentary, that is available for the formulation of our theories. That is, more specifically, it depends upon what I call the resolving power of a theory? Theory-problem interaction, which underlies the growth of human knowledge, necessarily requires that our K-claims have a developmental structure that remains invariant under the relevant linguistic transformations. For only on such an assumption of a developmental structure does it make sense to say that our knowledge is something that grows and is capable of ever-increasing growth.
This follows a characterization of traditional epistemology and an examination of the radical alternatives - proposed by Popper and Quine -to it. For my argument here, I first formulate a principle which I call epistemic structuralism. I then go on to deal with the problems of episternic structure and growth of scientific knowledge within the framework of an objectivistic epistemology. In order to elucidate the nature of the framework itself, I work out what I call a general interaction theory as an explication of the biologically neutral, systems-invariant concept of a growing sytem.
For while it is necessary to maintain such a distinction, it does not warrant a complete rejection of TE in favour of a Popper-type OE. What is indeed warranted by this distinction is that we must not confuse a subjectivistic enterprise concerning knowledge with an objectivistic one. And as an important methodological consequence thereof, it seems perfectly reasonable to permit a subjectivistic and an objectivistic enterprise concerning human knowledge to run parallel to each other with the possibilities of their mutual interaction left open.
